Working together as a team is vital to a strong work environment. On a sunny Thursday in July at Paradise Point Resort and Spa (which also happens to be the location of the next CollegeSource Annual Conference), my colleagues from the Production Department and I attended a team building exercise.
We were divided into four teams and given a series of activity tasks to complete. As each team completed a task, they earned a piece of a bicycle. The bikes were special because, once they were assembled, they were given to four children at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego.
The teams competed at a number of activities, including a memory game that required us to work together to capture twin images from a field of face-down cards. The final activity was a pedal boat race around a buoy in the bay. Boat-mates had to work in sync with each other and the other pairs in their team to propel the boat around the buoy and back. Despite a strong spirit of competition, everyone was laughing after we discovered it wasn’t as simple as it looked! Some groups, like my partner and I, piloted the first length in reverse! Others took a small detour or two. But we all made it back in the end.
As much fun as I had, I was also able to take a lot away from the activities. The tasks proved to us that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. We discovered that when we worked in teams and utilized each person’s strengths, we completed the tasks more efficiently. The event really enhanced how we can learn from one another and run like a well-oiled machine.
As we like to say at CollegeSource, “It takes teamwork to make the dream work.”
